Throughout my life I have always enjoyed singing. I am not saying that those who have been around me when I am singing are all that joy-filled by what they hear coming forth from my mouth. Yet, I believe singing is a way to lift one’s spirit, as well as the spirit of others. To raise our voices in song can also be a wonderful way to praise our Lord. God has given us the gift of song/singing and when we use these gifts it is a great way to glorify Him.
King David was a person who used music/singing to bring honor and glory to Almighty God. He also used musical instruments to worship the King of kings and Lord of lords. In many places within the Psalms David highlights the importance of music in expressing his faith and the faith of others. Hear these words of David in Psalm 98, “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! Sing praises to the Lord with lyre and the sound of melody! With trumpets and the sound of the horn make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord”!
I definitely do not have the blessed gift of music that my namesake had. To be honest I am rather envious of King David and those individuals who are gifted with such amazing musical talents be they vocal or instrumental. With that being said, it does not mean there is no place for me or anyone else, who is not specially gifted in these areas, to make a joyful noise to my Lord. I truly believe music is an outpouring of what is in the heart. If you love God, then do not be afraid to sing out in praise to Him, and I bet no matter how good or not so good it is it will be sweet music to His ears! Pastor McCarty
