As people of God and caretakers of His Holy Word, we are to be proclaimers of the glory of the Lord to upcoming generations. It is not only an obligation/command which has been given to us to do by our Lord, but is also great privilege to pass on the tenants of our Christian faith which is solely based on the Word of God. “The writer of Deuteronomy tells us, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house , and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be a frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates”. In all these ways we can intentionally and diligently pass on God’s Word to those who follow after us.
The Apostle Paul reminds Timothy about what his student and protégé had learned throughout his childhood from his mother and grandmother about God’s Word. “I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.” This is the faith that has been passed down from generation to generation.
As those who have been adopted into the family of God, as His children, it is our rightful duty, the Lord’s commission, to pass the Christian faith we hold fast to on to our children, grandchildren, and those of future generations God puts in our path. How are they to know if they have not heard and how are they to hear if someone does not tell them! Romans 10:14
The Great Commission is our marching orders as disciples of Christ. “Jesus Said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:19 May we go, tell, and share with the generations that are coming behind us, the very Word of God which is the story of salvation in Jesus.
