Today we have so many Christians in America and around the world, who profess to be followers of Christ and part of the Christian community, yet they do not have the desire to walk as people of the light. It is one thing to say we are a Christian and still another to walk the walk of faith the Lord Jesus has called us to do.
The Christian faith is not merely about being a person who is content in saying they have been baptized into the faith and confirmed as a believer in a particular Christian denomination. Being a follower of Christ is an ongoing process as we strive, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to grow deeper and stronger in our faith and more importantly closer to our Savior. Being satisfied with a faith that is either status quo or in a dormant state is not what Christ has called us to as His faithful disciples.
The Apostle Paul speaks about such a mindset when he speaks to the Church members in Corinth. “But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is still jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving in a human way?” 1 Corinthians 3:1-3
How are we to realize what we are to do and how we are to act as followers of Christ, if we are not feeding on the meat and potatoes God offers us? Without partaking of those things which help us to grow and mature in our Christian faith, such as studying/reading God’s Word on a regular basis, being in God’s house for worship regularly, being fed often by Jesus’ very body and blood in His Supper, and being people of prayer, we cannot grow into the people the Lord desires us to be.
Jesus set the standard for us to follow. He sacrificially gave himself in service to His Father and in saving service to us. He was never content by just being satisfied with the status quo of His calling. No, instead of that He gave Himself fully to carrying out, even unto death, the mission and ministry of reconciliation and salvation the Father sent Him to accomplish.
I pray if you are a Christian and still on milk, as an infant in the faith, your heart will be renewed to seek feasting on the meat and potatoes the Lord has for you to enjoy as you grow as His child and a disciple of Christ. Pastor McCarty
